Floating Carpet
EPFL ALICE, Studio Wegman, Fall 2022
The "Floating Carpet" project emerged from a brief challenging us to engage the space around a vector that extended into Lac Léman. This unique line inspired a design that activates the lake as a public space, offering areas for relaxation, swimming, and social interaction. The resulting system is a field of modular wooden elements, supported by a submerged substructure, allowing the modules to float and respond to waves vertically while remaining horizontally fixed.
Challenged to use rammed earth as a material for land based part of the project, we designed a rammed earth and wood staircase and ramp. We had the opportunity to construct a fragment of the stair at 1:1 scale at a rammed earth workshop.
